New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
