Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve if you're playing as a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
